Bertani
FROM 1857
HISTORY
Bertani (part of Angelini Industries* since 2013), was founded in 1857 by brothers Giovan Battista and Gaetano Bertani in Quinto di Valpantena, north of Verona. Gaetano was even then an expert in the art of winemaking, having learned the new techniques in France from Professor Guyot. Since the beginning, Bertani has used the most advanced production techniques, both in viticulture and oenology, applied to all properties, from Valpantena to Soave, with total respect for the territory.
High professionalism and quality, commercial enterprise and innovative spirit were the traits that distinguished the two brothers from the very beginning. Bertani was among the first companies in Italy to understand the value of bottled wine. Large investments were made right from the start in the vineyards and winery to bottle and export Italian quality to the world with Bertani wines, which were already crossing the Atlantic Ocean before the end of the 19th century to be appreciated in many cities in the United States.
Bertani was born together with the Unification of Italy, with the desire and pride to represent the excellence of a new nation with a thousand-year-old culture.
The Academy of Agriculture, Arts and Commerce of Verona reported Bertani, in 1870, as a model winery, thanks to its professionalism, the introduction of specialized vineyards, and new farming systems, which immediately connoted the family's entrepreneurial spirit.
This commitment and the quality of its wines earned Bertani, in 1923, the distinctive symbol of the achievement of excellence: the patent of the royal house. Not only that: the quality of Bertani wines knew how to impose itself ever since for its refinement, so much so that Soave was present on the menu for the coronation of George VI of England in 1937.
In the mid-twentieth century, with the acquisition of Tenuta Novare, in Valpolicella Classica, Bertani concretized the half-century-long quest to produce the Wine, the one born to last forever. It is here, in fact, that the story of Amarone, a wine that symbolizes the territory from which it comes, begins.
BERTANI TODAY.
In 2013 Bertani was acquired by Angelini Industries*, a historic and well-known pharmaceutical brand that has been investing in the world of Italian wine for more than 20 years, enhancing the most vocated territories.
With 65 hectares of vineyards, today Bertani is a solid company whose products are distributed worldwide. There are two historic locations, Grezzana, the current HQ and beating heart of the company where winemaking, bottling and shipping take place, and Tenuta Novare in Arbizzano di Negrar, in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, cradle of great reds such as Amarone and Valpolicella Classico Superiore.
An icon of Italian wine in the world, Bertani combines the typicality of native grape varieties with the continuous updating of production facilities and focused attention to terroir. Respect for tradition balanced by a special innovative drive, great entrepreneurial ability in the service of the highest quality, are the guiding principles. Bertani's is a story made of passion, tradition and love for its land, respect for its identity without chasing trends: a path consolidated by consistent choices that have transformed a vocation into a product, thus immortalizing scents, flavors and undisputed charm.
The most recent (2019) wine project is that of I CRU DI BERTANI: it has given birth to two wines from Tenuta Novare's vineyards, Valpolicella Classico Le Miniere and Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ognisanti. A novelty that follows in the wake of Bertani's uncompromising style by letting two highly vocated vineyards of Valpolicella Classica, Ognisanti and Le Miniere, express themselves with a single voice.
THE TERRITORY: THE VALPANTENA
Valpolicella Valpantena geographically represents the first valley east of the city of Verona, known since antiquity for its strategic location and fertile soils. The name Valpantena comes from the Greek pantheon: the valley of all the gods. This area is in fact characterized by valley soils, very deep, with a moderately fine texture, originating from sedimentary and calcareous rocks. The climate has significant temperature ranges between day and night. This temperature change makes its wines dynamic, more immediately readable because they are less exaggerated. Wines that make freshness their strong point.
Bertani believes that a prestigious wine must have a solid tradition and consistency with the vocation of the production territory; commitment to quality, to excellence, not only of the product but also of the production processes; close relationship with the place of origin and a rigorous and transparent production method.
Valpolicella Valpantena has always been an identity district for Bertani, which in 1857 saw its production headquarters established in this valley. Thus Bertani, which has shown that it believes in the potential of this area, today invests in a project, La Linea Valpantena, which values the territory and aims to place greater care and attention on enhancing the different souls of Valpolicella.
