Giacomo Montresor Wineries

A VERONESE HISTORY

The Montresor family has French origins, it comes from the Chateau Montresor, a small medieval village in the Loire Valley. In the mid-1600s a branch of the family moved to Italy, in the Veneto region, near Lake Garda, and there they found the right environment to continue developing one of the main family businesses: viticulture.

A Veronese history

The long history of the Montresor family boasts illustrious ancestors, such as Count Claude de Montresor, advisor to the Duke of Orleans in 17th century France. In the mid 1600s, a branch of the family moved to the Veneto region near Lake Garda, an area known for the quality of its moraine soils, and there found the right environment to continue to develop one of the family's main activities: viticulture. In 1892 Giacomo Montresor founded Cantine Giacomo Montresor.

This was the first act of a journey into the world of wine, which was followed by the purchase of an Osteria in the centre of Verona in the 1920s, and the construction, in 1934, of Cantine Giacomo Montresor in what is still the winery's headquarters today.

A life, that of Giacomo Montresor, all dedicated to the production of excellent wines and commercial development, first in Italy and then abroad. And if today landing in markets beyond the borders is a 'natural' path to grow, at the beginning of the last century it was a feat for daring pioneers.
And in fact it was during those peregrinations that an intuition arrived that is still today a distinctive trait of Cantine Montresor: the satin-finished bottle. The long journeys overseas risked oxidising the wine in those never-ending sea expeditions. How to do it?

The answer came directly from Giacomo, who developed the idea of satinising the bottle he designed, allowing him to preserve the wine and conquer overseas trade.
The next three generations went on to develop the company that has made Montresor wines known all over the world.

From the first bottle of dry Recioto Rustego in 1946, to the presentation in Canada in 1969 of what soon became an icon of Veronese wines in North America: Amarone della Valpolicella in satin-finished bottles. Montresor, in this way, has contributed to the growth of a territory, that of Valpolicella, which today is recognised as a viticultural excellence throughout the world.

In 2022, Cantine Giacomo Montresor celebrated 130 years of history with the inauguration of a Wine Museum dedicated to the history of the company, a new experiential wine shop and a celebratory bottle of Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva 2012 in a limited edition, in full Montresor style: satin-finished.
