San Rustico

AN ANCIENT FAMILY WINEMAKING TRADITION.

The San Rustico winery in Valgatara enjoys a venerable tradition of wine production from one of the area's oldest original wine producing families. This tradition dates back to 1870 when the first family vineyard was cultivated in the 'Gaso' region, high in the hills above Marano di Valpolicella.

Established by Great Grandfather Luigi Campagola, the winery swiftly rose to world reknown when it was awarded the gold medal from the Consulate of Copenhagen in 1908, and since then, the family's classic production secrets have been handed down by tradition from father to son, until we now arrive at the current fourth generation.

After the passing of their father Danilo, the task of producing fine wines fell to the brothers Marco and Enrico Campagnola who, through a lifetime of experience working at the side of their father, have continued to nurture and nourish the winery with dedication and passion. These attributes are combined with the professionalism and commercial commitment required to maintain a successful family business in this day and age.

Immersed in, and remaining ever faithful to the traditions of the Valpolicella Classico wine, the brothers Marco and Enrico, respectively oenologist and agronomist personally follow each stage of production. From the cultivation of vineyards and subsequent selection and hand picking of the grapes, to the traditional drying and ageing methods that are unique to the classic Valpolicella region.

In short, from the vine to the bottle.

The selection of grapes (particularly Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella) takes place in the 22 acres owned by the company, extending between the hills of Valgatara, Marano and Fumane, which represent the heartland of the Valpolicella.

Production of the Classic Amarone and Valpolicella Recioto, can vary from 1200 to 2000 q.li per year (accounting for around 40% of the total wine production). The selected grapes destined for these wines are placed in ventilated, humidity-controlled drying cellars for around three months, from late September to December: the grapes are laid on traditional screens known as 'arele' or in open drying crates to provide the optimal air circulation around them needed to retain their characteristics during the drying process and on to vinification.

After vinification the wine is then ready to begin the aging process. The company employs both traditional large casks (20 hl to 60 hl) in Allier oak, and smaller, 500 liter and 225 liter barriques in French oak (Allier, Nevers and the precious Tronçais).

The annual production is about 170,000 bottles: the foreign market (especially Europe and North America) accounts for 60% of production, and the rest goes to the Italian market. It is divided into two selection lines: the classic "San Rustico" (which includes Valpolicella Classico DOC, Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOC, Amarone and Recioto) and the prestigious "Gaso" range, selected from the best grapes and vineyards. Among these noble, fine wines you will find the much adored, world-renowned Amarone "Gaso."

The San Rustico winery welcomes both Italian and overseas customers into the type of friendly, relaxed, serene atmosphere that can only be truly achieved where there is supreme confidence in the handiwork offered, inviting guests to revel in the passion that flows through the winery and the surrounding vineyards. A Passion found enclosed within each bottle bearing the San Rustico label.
