Il Girasole
THE HOUSE THAT FOLLOWS THE SUN, COMBINING INGENUITY AND FUTURISTIC CHARM
Hidden among the hills of Marcellise, a few kilometres from Verona, lies one of Italy's most surprising and visionary residences: Il Girasole. This is not just a simple country villa, but the first house in the world capable of rotating on its axis to follow the sun, just like a sunflower.
The building was constructed in the 1930s by engineer Angelo Invernizzi, who, fascinated by technical progress and the possibilities offered by mechanics, decided to create a project that combined architecture, ingenuity and avant-garde spirit. The aim was to create a modern, healthy and technological home, capable of guaranteeing maximum natural light and a 360° panoramic view at all times. A concept that we would now call “sustainable”, but which at the time was pure experimentation.
The villa consists of a central tower over 40 metres high, on which rests an L-shaped living area that could once make a complete rotation in about 9 hours. Thanks to an ingenious system of tracks and carriages connected to a powerful diesel engine, the house moved slowly following the path of the sun from sunrise to sunset, offering its inhabitants bright and pleasantly exposed rooms. A true marvel of domestic engineering, it aroused amazement and curiosity even at the time.
In addition to its functionality, IL Girasole is striking for its aesthetics: clean, rational lines intertwine with visionary details, creating a balance between rationalist architecture and futuristic influences. It is no coincidence that the building is often cited as one of the most original and daring creations of 20th-century Italy, capable of combining pragmatism with almost science-fiction-like imagination.
Although the mechanism is no longer functional today, the visionary charm of this building remains intact. Walking through its spaces, one can still perceive the audacity of those who, almost a century ago, had the courage to look to the future and conceive of the house not only as a refuge, but as a living, dynamic machine that interacts with its surroundings.
Il Girasole is not just a house: it is a symbol of Italian creativity, an experiment that anticipated today's thinking on the intelligent use of energy and the integration of architecture and nature by decades. It is a place where ingenuity and poetry meet, leaving everyone who visits it with wonder in their eyes.
How to visit
Il Girasole is not open to the public, but can be visited by booking special 2-hour guided tours, at a cost of €18 per person.
